Asriel's humour had faded by the time Adder had formed a reply. He listened sombrely and inclined his head. I can relate, he thought grimly, and a twinge of sadness stirred inside him. His face was instantly guarded, emotionless. His eyes burned, but it was hard to place the extreme emotion within them. He turned away from the alphess to stare into the snow, remembering his mate, his mother, his sister...
Asriel sat perfectly still for several minutes, claws digging into the soil as he banished his anger, his remorse. When he deemed himself fit to turn back to Adder, turn back he did. His eyes no longer burned so fiercly, but his expression remained guarded.
"Aye. It's often hard to explain your past, especially when you know it will come back to haunt you if you do so." Asriel's deep voice was serious and thoughtful, although it portrayed nothing of his anguish. His grey eyes met Adder's, and for a moment he did not lower them as he knew he should, but gazed straight at her, gaze piercing. Then, he looked away, over the Moonflow, with a soft, deep sigh.

Adder said nothing as Asriel spoke, and after. She merely gazed into the ground, and then raised her cranium to watch the Moonflow bubble. She felt like sighing, but even she decided that would be disrespectful, especially since Asriel seemed infuriated. Brother.. she thought, surprising herself. He.. is like Brother. She surprised herself by thinking so, but soon realised that indeed, Asriel reminded her of her brother.
' But, you know.. starting a new journey may not be so hard, despite the ones we have lost. Or maybe it has already begun, '
She surprised herself again when she said that. But suddenly, she realised where it had came from. Brother.. told me, she thought. And sure enough, she felt that it had been Brother talking, not her. However, a sharp new scent interrupted her thoughts as she realised yet another outsider had arrived. The aroma caught her offguard; and she scolded herself for letting herself fall into thoughts like that.
' Forgive my departure, Asriel. But there is a newcomer to attend to, '
She said, nodding towards the slightly elder male before turning to leave the Moonflow area. She wondered whether Asriel would think the Alpha a fool for coming out with something like that. No.. Brother is right. He is gone.. but he is guiding me, she thought determindly, before nodding and narrowing her eyes. Soon she was gone, heading off towards the Borderlines.

Asriel turned to look sharply at Adder as she spoke, eyes blazing once again. He stared hard at her, an intense curiosity flashing within his harsh grey eyes. Her rank was forgotten, her gender, everything about her that would usually stop Asriel from giving her such a raw look. Her words only existed, ricocheting around his brain.
"Who told you that?" Asriel demanded in a hiss, but Adder was already excusing herself, leaving the area. He watched her go with blazing eyes, and even contemplated going after her. But he didn't. Instead, he turned back to the Moonflow. His expression was hard and angry, but beneath it there was a layer of rare regret. He shut his eyes, leaning back slightly, head tilting upwards to face the sky as he remembered...
---
"You're not going to take her away from me, Asriel... I love her!"
"You don't love her! If you loved her you would leave now! You know the relationship doesn't go both ways!"
"How dare you! I thought you were my friend!"
There was a flurry of snow and a sudden, vicious snarl. When the white powder had settled, two wolves were visible, one lying on his back on the floor, breathing hard, the other towering over him, claws digging into his shoulders.
"So did I, Chinook. But I love Ryn, and she loves me. I'm not going to let you persuade her otherwise." The young Asriel thrust his muzzle into the others face as he spoke, teeth bared in a snarl.
"Asriel... please, let her go. It's time for you to move on. She doesn't love you - " Chinook never finished his sentence. Asriel lifted his paw and struck him a mighty blow around the face, and blood stained the snow.
Asriel leapt backwards, and Chinook gained his feet in a second. They faced each other, former friends, preparing themselves for a vicious battle...
---
Asriel blinked, then released a deep sigh. He had won the battle, but had lost the greatest friend he had ever had... That had been one of the hardest decisions he'd ever had to make. His friend or his mate...
He had chosen love over companionship, and he didn't regret it. He was still angry at Chinook, but other things had happened since their fight to put his anger in perspective. He knew he could forgive him now, all these years on.
A sudden idea struck Asriel, and his head snapped down so that he could stare at the Moonlilies. Adder had obviously known Chinook... no other wolf spouted such sayings. If he was still alive... A smile crept over Asriel's muzzle. How he would love to be reunited with the male once again.
